Urban Institute, Ireland

Sustainable development involves the enhancement of quality of life through the achievement of an appropriate growth in, and balance between, natural capital (ecological services), human-made capital (machines, buildings, roads, consumer goods etc.), social capital (the cohesiveness and success of societies), and human capital (our health and education). The UII unites the scientific, technical, professional, and public-policy disciplines of UCD, including engineering, planning, environmental policy, architecture, geography, economics, sociology, physics, rural development, transport policy, biology and climatology, to provide the synergy required to tackle the multidimensional challenges of achieving sustainable development in new and innovative ways. Investment in UII will generate many times more output in terms of additional income, research students and publications. This multiplier will ensure that the project is financially and intellectually sustainable and makes sustainable development a flagship in the evolution of UCD and Ireland as an important global centre for intellectual excellence.
